Ph.D. Ocean Engineering, Florida Atlantic University
M.E., Ocean Engineering, University of Florida
P.E. License States of Florida, New York and South Carolina

Dr. Harris is an Associate Professor in the Department of Marine and Environmental Systems at the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida. He has an educational background in ocean, coastal and civil engineering specializing in structural and geotechnical design. Dr. Harris was named in Who’s Who in Frontier Science and Technology and has served as a United Nations’ consultant to the Trinidad and Tobago Institute of Marine Affairs. He specializes in ocean engineering, coastal engineering and physical oceanography. Prior to joining Florida Tech in 1980, Dr. Harris performed numerous engineering studies and designs while with the Corps of Engineers and in private industry.

His research projects include:

• Determining the feasibility of using recycled plastic “lumber” for constructing marine structures such as docks, bulkheads and breakwaters

• Design and performance of new technologies for beach erosion control, including sand-filled geotextile containers, beach face dewatering systems and submerged breakwaters

• Field measurements of waves, tides and currents, and applications to ship and submarine operations and harbor design

• Design and monitoring of the structural integrity and stability of artificial reef units
